High-wind shingle install checklist for review

On a Kitty Hawk re-roof last month, we used SBS‑modified architectural shingles for better cold flex and tear resistance (ASTM D7158 Class H), a true 6‑nail pattern with 1‑1/4" ring‑shanks into 5/8" OSB, and cap‑nailed synthetic underlayment 6" o.c. — zero blow-offs after a 60+ mph squall. We’ve had better wind performance when we run a ‘double-starter at the rakes’ and add a thin bead of mastic under the starter and first course — keeps gusts from prying that edge. Only caveat: if temps stay under about 40°F or the seal strip isn’t bonding, we hand-seal the first three courses and the ridge caps per the shingle instructions. If weather’s kicking up during dry-in, we tighten cap nails on the synthetic to about 3–4 in. o.c. along rakes/eaves until shingles go.
